Notes from J

September is a contemplative time for me. My mother was born in September and would have been 100 years old this year. Both of our children were born this month as well. Perhaps because of that, September is a time of evaluation and change for me.

When the kids were small we marveled at what they had learned and how much they had grown over the year. September was also a time of reviewing the aging of my mother until her eventual passing in 1999. Now it is a time to remember her.

Now I look at the accomplishments of my adult children, who have also become dear friends. And I contemplate my own aging and that of my partner. I’m so happy where we both are in life: Larry finds such joy playing banjo and I love doing readings, teaching and coaching.

The fall equinox comes in September and represents moving into the dark. See the ritual below for how to make the most of this time.

I’ll be offering a fun class on Beginning Tarot, September 22 (see details below).

Enjoy the fall colors and the amazing sunsets at this time of the year.

Steps to Empower Your Life

1. Begin by practicing the belief that you deserve a life that is in your highest good. Being in harmony with your highest good will always feel right. Your new mantra, “I call on my guides to show me my highest purpose because I deserve a life of joy and fulfillment.”

2. Accept that when you call to work in harmony with your highest good it may not look like what you thought it would.

3. Establish boundaries. Be clear about your boundaries with others so that you can meet your own needs. Make decisions that are in your best interest rather than deferring to others.

4. Pay attention to what makes you feel peaceful, in joy and balanced and seek out those situations.

I wish the best for each of you and I am available to assist you as needed.

Seek and honor the wisdom within

Share your knowledge, though others may not accept it

Be willing to stand apart in your truth

Accept, with compassion, each person has their own path

Your wisdom shines for the world to see

You are empowered when you are willing to share your truth, as you experience it, while accepting, with compassion, that the path of others may be different. It is sometimes lonely because there are times when one must follow the truth even though others reject it.

Embrace the power and mystery of the night

Listen to the secrets of the constellations

Observe the subtle tides of your emotions

Reveal that which is hidden

When the Moon comes up for you in a reading, be aware of the difference between illusions and reality and pay attention to the internal tides of your dreams and feelings. Ritual for the Fall Equinox

The Fall equinox is about the perfect balance between night and day. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere it is the time when we are moving towards the dark. Just as the colors are vibrant as we moved from the dark to the light at the Spring Equinox, so are the dying leaves colorful during the Fall equinox. Below are a few different ways to celebrate the equinox this year.

During this equinox think about where you want to bring balance to your life. Sit quietly and evaluate the cornerstones of life: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Physical – Decide what you will do to balance your physical body as you move towards the dark. Create a stable exercise program that takes into account the dark and often stormy weather. Review your diet and plan healthy meals to bring to your table. Decide adjustments you can make to help others less fortunate and help to heal the earth.

Emotional – Contemplate how you will need to be emotionally healthy and balanced during the dark of the fall and winter. Choose your balance between being alone and visiting with others. Think of what gives you comfort in the dark and cold and prepare activities that will help you balance your emotions. Make a list of self-love activities and nurturing so that if you are sad you can be reminded of how to nurture yourself.

Mental – Resolve to keep yourself mentally stimulated. Consider activities like a film or book group that encourages an exchange of ideas and alternative views of the world. Learn, or expand on skills and talents you enjoy.

Spiritual – Settle on a routine for your spiritual practice. Decide what you want to call into your life, and with whom you want to share your spiritual time. Review what spirituality IS to you and how you can expand it in your life – if expansion of spirit will bring you more balance.

The act of reviewing and making a list to bring balance in your life after this equinox may help you live more consciously. Please contact me if you would like help with this exercise or if you would like to have a class to get ideas from others. Just email me at
